Rio Salon & Spa: A World Unto Itself
Even a casual visit to the Rio Salon and Spa in Parkville reveals an unusual cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The environment begins with the attractive Parkville English Landing location overlooking the town's historic downtown. The relaxing Spanish motif brings up an even deeper explanation.
Born in Cuba, owner Sonia Brown moved to the United States when she was only six years old. Though young, she brought a deep commitment to work inheirited from her parents. She opened her first salon in 1989 and learned her craft over 14 years near 81st and North Oak.
Sonia began envisioning something larger and more comprehensive for her customers, offering message therapy, body wrap, manicure, pedicure, or a change of pace makeover. Today, Rio is also redifining services such as body treatments adn hair coloring, while breaking barriers with a menu of services for men, and skin treatments that literally create baby-soft resutls.
Rio Salon and Spa also emphasizes professionalism. "I believe in continuing education, " Sonia explained. "I believe our staff has the best color specialists in the Northland. And we work constantly to improve ourselves."
Currently numbering 16, the staff undertakes monthly evaluations geared to self-improvement. "We a great team of people," Sonia explained, "As I get older, one of the most exciting things is nurturing my staff, watching them grow. That's really exciting to me."
Rio's staff includes four levels of professionals who offer different fee structures depending on their training and experience. The monthly evaluations also include Sonia herself. "Every month I look at what I do and if I still love it I'm okay," she said.
One of the most visible members of the team includes business partner David Brown. "Everybody loves David," Sonia noted. "He's the one who makes sure everyone walks in and feels at home."
No matter how much Rio grows, Sonia promises to continuewhat has made the spa a success. "For me, the important part is that everyone can come in and enjoy excellent service."
